About Winston Salem

Winston-Salem is also known as the “Twin City” due to its dual heritage. It was once two separate cities: Salem, founded in 1766 by Moravians, and Winston, in 1849.

They officially merged into one city in 1913, but people still call it Winston sometimes. Once a quiet town, Winston-Salem has grown over time. Now, it’s the fourth-largest metropolitan area and fifth-biggest city in North Carolina.

Winston has a nice, walkable downtown, friendly people, delicious food, amazing art, and cultural festivals. Must-visit attractions include Old Salem Museums & Gardens, the Reynolda House Museum of American Art, and Wake Forest University.

When it comes to accommodations, the city is home to the best hotels, cabins, vacation rentals, RV parks, and campgrounds.
