How far is Miami from Atlanta by Plane?

Atlanta and Miami are two major cities in the southeastern United States, separated by a distance of approximately 660 miles. The most popular way to travel between the two cities is by plane, with several airlines offering daily nonstop flights between Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport (ATL) and Miami International Airport (MIA). 

The total flight distance from Miami to Atlanta is around 660 miles. The total flight duration is around 2 hours.

For those looking to travel between Atlanta and Fort Lauderdale, the distance is about 585 miles, with a similar flight duration.

Airport Information

The Miami International Airport

Miami International Airport (MIA), located on 3230 acres of land near Downtown Miami, is the primary airport serving South Florida. MIA is a hub for the Southeastern United States with passenger and cargo flights to destinations across the globe.

The South Terminal of MIA provides direct access to Concourses H and J, which operate both international and domestic flights. Major airlines that fly out of MIA include American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, United Airlines, and Southwest Airlines.

If you are traveling domestically, you can find your airline at either Concourse D or Concourse E, which are located in the North Terminal. For international travel, head to the South Terminal where you will find Concourses H and J.

MIA offers a wide variety of dining options for travelers. If you’re looking for a quick bite, there are several fast-food options such as McDonald’s and Subway. If you have more time to spare, you can sit down and enjoy a meal at one of the many restaurants, including Corona Beach House and Icebox Cafe.

Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport

Another option for flying into the Miami area is Fort Lauderdale. 

Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL) is a major airport located 29 miles north of Miami. The airport serves millions of passengers each year and is a hub for many major airlines, including American Airlines, JetBlue Airways, Southwest Airlines, and Spirit Airlines.

FLL has four terminals, with Terminal 1 serving Southwest Airlines and Terminal 2 serving Delta Air Lines. Terminal 3 is for all other airlines, including JetBlue Airways and Spirit Airlines. United Airlines also operates out of Terminal 4, which has a United Club lounge available for purchase on the day of travel.

The domestic and international terminals at FLL are located in separate areas of the airport. Domestic flights depart from Terminals 1, 2, and 3, while international flights depart from Terminal 4.

The airport offers a variety of dining options, including fast food and sit-down restaurants. Some popular options include BurgerFi, Casa Noble, and Shula Burger.  You can also grab a drink at one of the airport’s bars, such as Budweiser Brewhouse or Corona Beach House.

If traffic is flowing well, the drive from FLL to Miami takes around 30 minutes via I-95. However, traffic can be heavy at times, so it’s important to plan accordingly. Passengers can also take a shuttle, taxi, or ride-sharing service to reach their destination in Miami.

Miami and Ft. Lauderdale are both just a short plane ride away from the crystal clear, turquoise waters of Bimini.

The Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport

The Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson Airport (ATL) is one of the busiest airports in the world, serving over 100 million passengers annually. It is the largest of 9 hubs for Delta Air Lines, which operates out of all seven concourses at the airport.

Many other major airlines fly out of ATL, including American Airlines, United Airlines, Southwest Airlines, and JetBlue Airways. The airport has two terminals, the Domestic Terminal and the Maynard H. Jackson Jr. International Terminal.

The Domestic Terminal at ATL is divided into North and South sections, with the North Terminal serving Delta and the South Terminal serving all other domestic airlines. The airport has a wide variety of dining options available, including fast food, cafes, and sit-down restaurants. Some popular options include Chick-fil-A, Bojangles, and Sweetwater Brewery.

The international terminal also has a range of dining options, including a food court with several choices and sit-down restaurants such as One Flew South that offer a more upscale dining experience.

Columbus Airport

CSG, formerly the Columbus metropolitan area airport, offers flights to Atlanta. You can then layover in Atlanta and fly on to the Miami area. CSG is located in western Georgia, so even though it’s a one-stop flight, it’s still a great option for people who live in that area who don’t want the hassle of driving all the way to the Atlanta airport. Plus it avoids the traffic not only in Atlanta but also the heavy traffic around the airport area.

American Airlines and Delta both fly out of CSG.

Direct flights from Atlanta to Miami and Fort Lauderdale are available from a variety of commercial airlines, including Delta Airlines, American Airlines, Southwest Airlines, Spirit Airlines, and Latam Airlines.

The flight time is approximately two hours, making it a convenient option for travelers. The airline also offers connecting flights to Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport, with layovers in other cities.

Frontier Airlines

Frontier Airlines is a popular budget airline that offers affordable flights between Miami, Florida and Atlanta, Georgia. With the Discount Denâ„ , you can enjoy unlimited savings all year round when booking flights. According to recent search results, Frontier Airlines offers round trip flights from Miami to Atlanta for as low as $48. They are the possibly the best fares of all the airlines mentioned.

Where to stay in Atlanta

Atlanta is one of the largest cities in the U.S., and so of course also has plenty of options for accommodations.

Is there a hotel inside the Atlanta airport?

Not really, no. There are a lot of hotels very close by, many of which offer a free shuttle to and from the airport. But there’s isn’t a true hotel located within the airport itself.

However, there is a place to get some rest. Minute Suites offers the chance to book a quiet, private room to at least get some rest or catch up on some work. There are two locations in the airport, both located in Concourse B. One is near Gate 16 and the other one is near Gate 24.

Most people book these rooms for a few hours only, but you can book them for a full 8 hours and sleep overnight here. It is pricey, but if you really don’t want to leave the airport it may be worth it.

Amenities include free wifi, a business center, and children’s activities. They also have showers here, although that costs extra.Minutes Suites is pet friendly and welcomes your furry friend for a $25 fee.

Luxury option: Four Seasons Hotel

For a grand experience, consider staying at the Four Seasons Hotel located in the heart of Midtown. Their location puts them just a 10 minute walk from Piedmont Park, and a little over a 20 minute drive from the Atlanta International Airport.

Four Seasons offers luxurious rooms, fine dining, and are in proximity to popular attractions like the High Museum of Art and Atlanta Botanical Garden. Amenities include free wifi, a pool, a hot tub, and an onsite bar, restaurant, and spa. 

They are also pet friendly. Pets are welcome for $100 per pet, per stay. Service animals are exempt from pet fees.

Budget Option: Hampton Inn & Suites Downtown

The Hampton Inn & Suites Atlanta-Downtown provides a comfortable stay in a prime location without breaking the bank. They are in a pretty good location, too: an 8 minute walk from the World of Coca Cola, a 15 minute walk to the Mercedes Benz Stadium, and a 20 minute drive to the airport.

Hampton Inn provides basic amenities, including free breakfast, laundry onsite, and free wifi. Coffee and tea is available in the common areas.

Hampton Inn is also pet friendly. Both dogs and cats are welcome for a fee of $75 per accommodation, per stay. You may bring up to 2 total pets, and service animals are exempt from pet fees.

Great Camp Spot: Stone Mountain Park

For the nature lovers, Stone Mountain Park, located on the outskirts of the city, offers both campgrounds and cabins. This allows you to relax and rejuvenate amidst nature after the long drive from Charlotte, while also being just a short drive from all the action in Atlanta.

Miami also has far more accommodations than any list could provide. So this list is to just get you started. Check what are you’re going to be first, then you can research your various options to find a hotel that fits your needs.

Is there a hotel inside the Miami airport?

Yes, there is a hotel inside the airport in Miami. If you’re planning on flying into the Miami International Airport and laying over to another destination, or flying internationally, you may find it to be a very convenient option.

The Miami International Airport Hotel is located inside Terminal E, on the second level.

In addition to its location, amenities include free wifi, soundproof rooms for a good night’s sleep, and onsite restaurants, including the Air Margaritaville Restaurant.

This hotel is pet friendly and welcomes up to 2 dogs or cats weighing up to 20 pounds each. The pet fee is $25 per night, per pet. There is a fenced-in pet relief area within the airport as well.

Luxury option: Esmé Miami Beach

Esmé Miami Beach is known as more of a chic hotel than a luxury hotel, but it is beautiful, charming place to stay that is ultra stylish, highly rated, and very comfortable. It also puts you right in the heart of Miami Beach, just a short walk from the beach.

It comes with standard amenities, including free wifi and a pool. Breakfast is available onsite. This hotel is pet friendly, but with a pretty hefty pet fee of $250 per stay. Dogs up to 55 pounds are welcome, and service animals are exempt from fees.

Budget option: Regency Miami Airport by Sonesta

Regency Miami isn’t the most rock-bottom hotel in Miami, but it’s a good combination of affordability and quality. After all, in a city like Miami you could find yourself in a pretty bad situation with accommodations if you weren’t careful. Overall, it has very good reviews for the price point, coming in at 8.4/10 on Expedia.

Amenities include a free shuttle to and from the airport, a pool, a gym, and an onsite restaurant and bar. Unfortunately, they charge for Wifi and also charge $23 per night for parking – but in central Miami, that’s likely to be expected. But you’ll want to look at your total costs, including these add-ons, before booking.

Regency is pet friendly and welcomes up to 2 dogs for $75 per stay, per pet. Food and water bowls are available, and service animals are exempt from the additional charge.

Things to do in Miami

The city of Miami has tons of things to do. It’s known for its food, its party scene, and its strong cultural roots in Latin America and the Caribbean. Miami is also close to Fort Lauderdale and West Palm Beach, both of which have even more great things to do. The Blue Heron Bridge is a famous snorkeling and dive spot that many divers think is one of the best shore dives in the world!

Along the way, you can also stop at the Kennedy Space Center, the Merritt Island Wildlife Refuge, and Fort Pierce.

Little Havana is Miami’s Cuban neighborhood, and it’s filled with great restaurants and things to do. It almost transports you to Cuba, with street signs even written in Spanish.

Check out the famous Versailles, widely regarded as the best Cuban restaurant in the city. Just practice your Spanish before going – you may find that there are sections where not much English is spoken! 

The Everglades National Park

By the time you get to Miami, you’ll only be a couple hours from Key Largo, the first key in the Florida Keys. The Keys are known for their beautiful, turquoise water with excellent opportunities for water sports like snorkeling, paddle boarding, and fishing. There are also some amazing beaches there, like at Bahia Honda State Park.
